East Africa is home to some of the worlds poorest people. According to UNICEF, more than 37 percent of the population in East Africa is living below the poverty line.
As it stands millions of people are struggling to make ends meet & facing extreme hardship on a daily basis.
Tens of thousands of struggling families, orphans, widows & children are in desperate need as they lack access to the basic necessities required for their survival.
This includes access to food, clean water, education & medical care.
Without urgent support the situation for them will remain critical.
East Africa as a region is currently facing one of the worst droughts in generations as a result of intense climate extremes.
The lack of rainfall & intense heat means water is becoming scarce.
At this moment in time roughly half of the entire population is lacking access to safe drinking water.
Countless communities across the region are having to cope with limited resources & lack of sanitation facilities.
For those most vulnerable, this has led to numerous health problems, including increased levels of diarrhoea, cholera & other water-borne diseases in both adults & children.
Millions of people are now facing major uncertainty & crisis due to ill health, crop failures, loss of livestock & affected livelihoods.
With little to no means in order to make ends meet, they need urgent aid to ensure their survival.
East Africa, is also suffering from widespread food shortages. As it stands hunger threatens the lives of up to 28 million people.
The region has an increasingly high rate of malnutrition & hunger with as many as 19 million adults & 14 million children suffering from the effects.
The price of available food & water is soaring causing intense insecurity. Many families looking for hope & a way out of the crisis often have no option but to leave their homes & migrate.
They now remain displaced in their search for relief.
The most vulnerable in society often bear the brunt in any crisis. Women, children & the poorest are among those most affected by the draught, displacement & famine.
Millions of children living in poverty across East Africa are at a significant disadvantage.
They face unequal access to education, healthcare & nutrition, leaving them exposed to starvation, exploitation & abuse.
Poor educational opportunities for children can also affect their potential to learn, grow & prosper, while limited access to healthcare can lead to preventable illnesses going untreated with catastrophic outcomes.
For those in urgent need of aid across East Africa, gaining access to the basic necessities required for their survival can be an impossibility.
As a result of extreme poverty & drought millions of people lack access to proper sanitation & hygiene facilities. They are exposed to illnesses & cannot afford basic healthcare.
The hope for a brighter future is also diminished as families are unable bear the expense of getting an education. Limited in their options they often remain trapped in the endless cycle of poverty throughout their lifetimes.
The covid-19 outbreak has pushed millions deeper in to poverty across East Africa & worsened inequality.
For those who are the most vulnerable in society the pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on every aspect of their lives.
Already suffering from famine, instability & crisis, they have been pushed to new extremes & now face additional threats to their survival.
